It is a matter of fact that in past few decades Kashmir has witnessed one of the ugliest environments of personal, professional and economic growth. This has led to a very undesirable yet unavoidable trend of brain drain. During nightmarish 90s parents concerned about the future of their kids explored new destinations of education and career for their kids. Businessmen concerned about the health of their commercial activities ventured into new markets and shifted bases of their processing units. This led to an ugly trend of intellectual flight from the valley. Those who remained managed to survive with educational gaps, choked cash inflows and day to day trauma.

There are few chest thumping examples from across the globe where Kashmiris have outsmarted many, ranging from social network giant twitter to world’s most powerful house-the white-house, Bollywood to IT, Banking to Engineering, Medicine to Art; Journalism to academics; almost everywhere. Having this super cool legacy of game changers and star studded team, why can’t we think of something which will help us in leveraging their exposure, skill and professionalism in renovating the business profile of the state of Jammu & Kashmir.

The Kashmiri Diaspora Co-founder Initiative (KDCI) is a unique investment program that seeks to engage the Kashmiri diaspora population who works in the Middle East, U.S., U.K and rest of the Indian States to fund the growth of small businesses in Kashmir while not only earning a social and financial return but also offers a corridor to reverse the brain drain which happened in last two and a half decades.

The KDCI responds to an identified need for funding in J&K to grow and scale micro enterprises: businesses that reduce poverty and benefit society on a multitude of levels. Over the next two years, through KDFI, The Silk Route Consulting Group will target 250 Co-founders from the Kashmiri diaspora.

The KDCI Program is very simple. One has to fill form (below) to register. Once the details are entered into that form, you will get access to the document containing details of the people who have registered their business plans with the Silk Route Group. You will then be free to contact the person whom you see as your potential co-founder. After you’ve found your suitable partner, your name will be removed from the document.

With winds of entrepreneurship blowing strongly in J&K, more and more people are willing to try the unconventional route and are taking the plunge. What they realize sooner or later, is that entrepreneurship is not just about an individual, but about building a team that complements each others’ skills. Usually, one tries to find a co-founder in their friend, colleague or a former classmate. But it so happens that even the person whom we know for years may not be an ideal co-founder.

The Silk Route Consulting Group, which people usually associate with “Silk Route Startup Sunday”, realized that there is a strong need of a platform where people can find their potential co-founders. With this objective in mind, it ran a pilot co-founder search program for startups early this year. Based on that experience, the program has been launched at a national level.

Some might find the idea of a stranger becoming a cofounder as impossible or impractical. But given the fact that businesses requires very specialized skill sets to run, especially in the beginning, one might not always be able find a person with suitable attributes in their close circle of friends and colleagues. Co-founder Search Program is specially designed to address this need.

You can contact Altaf Bashir who is co-ordinating the program, for more details. Their contact details are-ProgramCoordinator@thesilkroutegroup.com

Note: Kindly give our team a days time to share the list of potential co-founders with you.
